Intelligent Depth Sounder
|
 |
SDI’s Intelligent Depth
Sounder is ideal for surveying in shallow water, harbors, and waterways and pre-
and post-dredging applications. It is a simple-to-operate, full survey-grade depth sounder that digitizes
the echo to 16-bit resolution and stores the full digital record on hard disk.
IDS provides data playback with high resolution and detail.
65,536 shades of gray are digitized versus 16 shades of gray typical of
paper records. Depth resolution is
maintained regardless of the depth range.
Positions, events and operator annotations are exchanged between HYPACK
and SDIDEPTH programs. DEPTHPIC and SDIDEPTH software provide convenient replay and
reprocessing of hydrographic data without hand digitizing or scaling of
position. Navigation data and all
other collection parameters are saved with all depth soundings.
Post-processing with DEPTHPIC saves XYZ data in ASCII text format
compatible with HYPACK, SURFER, AutoCAD, ArcView and GIS programs for contouring
and TIN mapping.
|
| IDS operates from 12 vdc and with navigation
software, a
battery
and a boat, you are ready to survey.
SDI’s proprietary display is daylight visible and also dims for
excellent night viewing. SDI’s
hardened computers include internal shock mounted electronics, armored
display windows, marine grade aluminum display housings and non-corrosive
impact resistant cases, and stainless hardware.
Display controls and hinges are o-ring sealed and connectors are
waterproof or splash resistant.

Check |
 |
The Bar Check is used to calibrate a
depth sounder for draft and can also be used for
calibrating the speed of sound
throughout
the water column in survey sites with a maximum water depth of 50 to 75
ft.
The BarCheck is designed for very low drag
to minimize offset from the transducer
due to water current or boat drift. The
BarCheck has a small, low-stretch and low-drag Kevlar line marked with
flags in foot or meter increments. The line is attached to an 8”
diameter 10‑pound cast zinc disc with a flat top and parabolic
bottom. The zinc disc serves as an acoustic target for calibrating the
depth sounder and low drag weight to keep the
line vertical.
|
 |
The BarCheck is used to verify the draft
setting by lowering the BarCheck a short distance below the transducer and
adjusting the draft until the reading matches the BarCheck depth. The
BarCheck can then be used to determine the speed of sound of the water
column by lowering the bar check through the water column to near the
bottom. The depth sounder’s speed-of-sound is adjusted so the indicated
depth matches the BarCheck target depth.
The BarCheck can be raised at intervals to define any vertical
gradient in the water column speed of sound.
